SUMMARY
- Control pump speed of new LIN Bus Pierburg CWA400 pumps
- Two modes of speed control
- Utilize a PWM signal to control speed
- Connect a 3.5 Bar MAP sensor to ramp speed
- Motorsport grade Deutsch 8 pin connector
- Sealed with epoxy and silicone for weather resistance in a carbon fiber-infused enclosure
As of approximately March 2024, all newly produced Pierburg CWA400 water pumps ship with different electronics, removing the ability to control pump speed via PWM. This change greatly impacts the performance automotive community as these pumps are heavily favored as the pump of choice due to their excellent flow, OEM reliability, packaging, and speed control. Unfortunately, the only way to control the speed of the pumps now is via LIN Bus, a common communication protocol used by auto manufacturers like BMW.
Total Racing Products figured out a solution and we call it Pierburg Pal. Pierburg Pal, or PP for short, is a multi-functioning LIN Bus controller to immediately address this lack of speed control issue. PP is terminated with a motorsport-grade Deutsch 8-pin connector and has a two way switch to select between both functions the PP can provide.
Switch Position 1: PWM Speed Control Mode
In this mode, you can control your pump with similar logic the previous revision CWA400s accepted, utilizing a high side PWM output from your favorite ECU, such as a Motec. The PP is looking for a 100Hz signal while speed is controlled by duty cycle from 0 to 100%. Speed control is linear. The PP interprets the PWM signal and outputs the commands to the water pump over LIN Bus.
Switch Position 2: Pressure Sensor Speed Control Mode
Many owners/tuners have no way to send a PWM signal for speed control because their stock ECU or standalone ECU doesn’t support this feature. With a 3.5 Bar absolute pressure sensor connected, such as a MAP sensor from TRP or AEM, speed is ramped based on Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP). In vacuum, the pump begins to ramp faster as values start to increase. By the time positive boost pressure is achieved, the pump will be ramped to full speed. PP has pins onboard its 8 pin connector to provide 5V power, ground, and receive the signal from the MAP sensor being utilized.

Frequently Asked Questions
What comes with each Pierburg Pal?
Included with every Pierburg Pal is a DT-8 style connector, a connector lock, and pins so that you can wire it specific to your application. If you purchase a Pierburg Pal Universal Harness with your Pierburg Pal, you will not need the do-it-yourself DT-8 connector kit mentioned.
What if I don't know how to wire a connector?
TRP sells a universal harness that you can plug into your PP. You can purchase this harness here: https://totalracingproducts.com/product/total-racing-products-pierburg-pal-universal-harness/
